In order to create a family containing descriptions of one or more types in multiple languages and to overcome the problem of having to duplicate families for each single language that the manufacturer wants/needs, IFSEBIM has defined a group of parameters and formulas that allow the description of a product to be defined in multiple languages.
The methodology involves:
• The creation of several parameters, one for each desired language; for example, “1 Description_ENG”, “5 Description_FRA”, “6 Description_DEU”, etc.
• The creation of a “Language ID” parameter with which the designer can identify the number assigned to each language, for example, 1 = Description ENGLISH, 5 = Description FRENCH
• The creation of a "Language_Check" parameter that will verify the correct evaluation of the previous parameter; this is in order to resolve any problems if the value of the ‘Language ID’ parameter is lower or higher than the range of languages available within the family
• Definition of the formula below for the evaluation of the Revit standard parameter ‘Description’. In this way, when the designer changes the value of the ‘Language ID’ parameter, the product description will be updated according to the desired language.
if(Language_Check = 1, [1 ShortDescription_ENG], if(Language_Check = 2, [2 ShortDescription_USA], if(Language_Check = 3, [3 ShortDescription_ESP], if(Language_Check = 4, [4 ShortDescription_POR], if(Language_Check = 5, [5 ShortDescription_FRA], if(Language_Check = 6, [6 ShortDescription_DEU], if(Language_Check = 7, [7 ShortDescription_ITA], "")))))))
